Science

At Ellingham and Woodton Federation, we aim to develop a love of science in our pupils which will support their natural curiosity about the world around them and cultivate their ability to ask and answer their own questions about scientific topics.

We have developed a curriculum programme for each class which carefully builds on what children have learned before and prepares them for the topics which follow. This allows them to build their understanding of both the substantive and disciplinary knowledge of the subject, supporting their developing understanding. Links have also been made with other curriculum subjects such as DT and maths which support the children’s understanding and ability to make links between the different disciplines.

We believe in enthusing children in science not only through inspiring lessons, but also through a wide variety of enrichment activities and events. We celebrate Space Week in the Autumn Term and British Science Week in Spring. We also arrange for visitors to come into school and talk to the children about science. We believe it is important to involve children’s families in their science learning and therefore frequently hold events such as family learning afternoons and planetarium evenings that parents and carers can enjoy with their children. Every year, children from KS2 have the opportunity to become science ambassadors and to support outreach work and science events in our schools.

Woodton and Ellingham are both part of a thriving Ogden Trust Partnership with other schools across the county, with Woodton being the hub school for the group. The partnership enables us to share ideas and good practice as well as supporting us in delivering exciting and valuable learning opportunities for our pupils.
